心理学の研究において，ある特定の地域，属性を持った人々のデータが中心となり，それらがあたかも人類全体を代表するサンプルかのように扱われるという問題は以前から提起されています。このいわゆるWEIRD（Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic）問題は広く議論されており，近年では，多国間での共同研究やデータ共有による再現性の検討を通じて，より多様な人々を対象とすることが試みられています。これらを通じて，一般化可能性を高めたり，文化的差異を明らかにしたりすることで，少しずつWEIRD問題を解消しようとされています。
その一方で，心理学で扱われる概念の多くはWEIRD圏の人々によって提言されたものであり，どのような概念を検討するかといった点では，依然としてWEIRD問題を完全には克服できていないと言えるのではないでしょうか。それぞれの文化には，その地域で培われた特有の感性，言葉，習慣があります（例えば，日本におけるお辞儀文化や和の精神，俳句などの芸術）。これらの中にはこれまで個別に検討されてきたものもありますが，見過ごされているものも多く，WEIRD圏以外の人々がどのように世界を認識しているかというプレゼンスはまだ十分ではありません。
本特集号では，アジア各地の興味深い概念を集め，心理学の新たな視点や概念を提唱することを目的として，これに関連する心理学研究についての論文を募集します。これまで心理学研究であまり注目されてこなかった概念だけを対象にする必要はなく，既に焦点が当てられてきた概念（例えば，相互協調的自己観）を新たな視点から見直すような内容も歓迎します。また，必ずしも文化間の比較を含む必要はありません。実証的な研究論文だけでなく，理論的な示唆に富むレビュー論文や，革新的な技術・方法論の開発に関する報告も募集します。これらの概念には，英語をはじめとする他言語で説明するのが難しいものもあるかもしれませんが，本特集号では，このような挑戦を通じて多くの人が理解し，共感できる場を提供することで，心理学における新しい潮流を提起することを目指します。
なお，この特集号は，機関誌等編集委員会Japanese Psychological Research編集小委員会と国際委員会の共同企画によって行われます。

In psychological research, concerns have been raised about the tendency to rely on data from people in specific regions or with particular attributes as if they represent all of humanity. This so-called WEIRD (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) problem has been widely discussed. In recent years, efforts have been made to address this issue by increasing the diversity of research participants through international collaboration and data sharing, as well as by examining reproducibility. These efforts are gradually trying to resolve the WEIRD problem by enhancing the generalizability and clarifying cultural difference.
However, many of the concepts studied in psychology have been proposed primarily within WEIRD populations. This means that we have not yet fully overcome the WEIRD problem in terms of what concepts we select and investigate. Each culture has its own unique cultural sensibilities, languages, and customs that have been nurtured within its specific context (e.g., the bowing and greeting culture, spirit of harmony, and artistic forms such as haiku poetry, etc.). Some of these phenomena have been studied individually in the past, but many remain overlooked, and the perspectives of people outside the WEIRD framework are still underrepresented in psychological research.
This special issue aims to explore and present compelling concepts from around Asia, and to propose new perspectives and contributions to psychological science. We welcome papers on psychological research related to this topic. Submissions may explore underrepresented concepts to date and revisit previously studied ones (e.g., interdependent self-construal) from new perspectives. It is not necessary to include comparisons between cultures, and we welcome research approached from a broad perspective. Additionally, we encourage review papers that provide theoretical implications, as well as reports on the development of innovative techniques and methodologies. We recognize that some concepts may be difficult to articulate in English or other non-native languages than original one; Nevertheless, this special issue seeks to foster understanding and engagement, paving the way for new trends in psychological science through this collaborative effort.
This special issue is a joint project of the Editorial Board of Japanese Psychological Research and Committee on International Affairs of the Japanese Psychological Association.
- ・Authors who intend to submit a manuscript to the special issue should first submit an abstract (Max. 500 words) for consideration by the 28th of February 2026 through the following online form (https://forms.gle/9WmaiYWtn6rMDXqr8).
- ・Submitted abstracts will be screened for acceptance, and the results will be notified by the 31st of March 2026.
- ・The full paper should be prepared following JPA Publication Manual and submitted by the deadline on the 31th of July 2026. The reviewed and accepted papers will be published in Japanese Psychological Research, Vol. 69 No. 3, scheduled for publication in July 2027.
